Premium quality or guaranteed fluidity? Client-transparent DASH-aware bandwidth allocation at the radio access network

In this paper we propose a novel client-transparent Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH)-aware bandwidth allocation strategy. The approach, while being application layer transparent, guarantees fluidity to all users but it provides priority-based services premium users, identified by their Willingness-To-Pay (WTP) profiles. Since different service qualities can be accommodated using WTP, the approach extended XR services, immersive videos, live uplink streaming. To achieve goal, problem is firstly formulated as classical Game Theory whose closed form solution clearly understood in literature. nutshell, WTP-based, Theoretically Optimal Bandwidth Allocation (WTP-GTOBA), satisfies minimum needs of each user and then fairly distributes residual bandwidth. WTP-GTOBA approximately implemented greedy, transparent algorithm at DASH-aware network element managing neighbouring radio access stations. Thereby, proposed method suitable for integration WTP resource management among multiple providers heterogeneous client groups. Numerical simulations carried out under realistic scenario show that outperforms state-of-the-art application-layer competitors, providing quality and/or guaranteed based on WTP.
